Boot Fire prompts 395 closure, evacuations

The Boot Fire began in the early afternoon on Tuesday, September 4 in the hills nine miles southwest of Walker and 15 miles northwest of Bridgeport.

Its cause is unknown. It originated near Bootleg Lake Campground.

The blaze has grown to 6,706 acres, causing evacuations in Fales Hot Springs, Devil’s Gate Pass, Swauger Creek, and at the Marine Corps’ Mountain Warfare Training Center. It’s burning on the east and west slopes of Walker River Canyon on Toiyabe National Forest land.

Highway 395 has been closed since Wednesday between Eastside Lane in Walker to the northside of Bridgeport. State Route 108 has also been closed since Wednesday from the Mono County line to the intersection with Highway 395.
