Keep a breast fundraiser

Support the fight against breast cancer at a Keep A Breast Foundation fundraiser this Saturday, April 14, at Lakanuki starting at 8 p.m., hosted by A Wave a Day and World Minded.

Lava Moon will provide live music, and there will be raffle prizes from Patagonia, Dakine, Spy Optics, the Westin, P3 and local businesses.

Get safe disabilities training

A very special free training to understand those with special needs and developmental disabilities will be held on Tuesday, April 24, at 10 a.m. at Mammoth Lakes Fire Station 1, 3150 Main Street in Mammoth Lakes.

Sponsored by the State Council for Developmental Disabilities, Get Safe’s commitment is to empower people from all walks of life and allow them to live “free of fear.”

Supervisor candidates nights

Mono County Republican Party is planning to hold a Meet the Candidates forum on Tuesday, April 24, in the at Bridgeport Memorial Hall starting at 6 p.m., also for the District 4 candidates. All three are scheduled to appear, and refreshements will be served.

That same night, the Lee Vining Chamber of Commerce will sponsor a forum for Mono County District 3 Supervisorial candidates Tim Alpers and Vikki Bauer at 6:30 p.m. in the Lee Vining Community Center.

DSES slide-a-thon

Not everyone can run or jump or play, but everyone can SLIDE on Mammoth Mountain! Help Disabled Sports Eastern Sierra with outreach and fundraising by doing what they do best: slide, during this year’s Slide-A-Thon, on April 21. DSES’s adaptive ski school teaches people with ANY disability how to ski or snowboard or rather SLIDE, using adaptive gear, such as mono-ski, bi-ski, ski bike and more. DSES has never turned anyone away due to their disability or inability to pay.

Put together a team of 5 and raise a minimum of $200 each = $1,000. Register on the DSES website and start a Firstgiving page to help raise funds

“Summers”-Time at Library

Area artist Beth Summers debuts a new showcase of oil paintings this month at the Mammoth Library. Summers’ artful eye for capturing the Eastern Sierra has earned many invitations to display her work on the Gallery Walls of the Library’s Ellie Randol Readign Room.

Friends of the Library sponsors gifted artists for the benefit of the general public, and all works can be purchased. Part of the proceeds from any sale benefit the Friends organization, which supports the Library and its many outreach and public service projects.

Meet Summers at an Artist Reception at the library from 5:30-7 p.m on April 26.

Drawing & Painting Workshop

The Mammoth Lakes Campus of Cerro Coso Community College offers a Community Workshop for Drawing and Painting that will meet on Thursdays from 4-5:30 p.m. Class ends May 17. Fee: $50

Lori Michelon will instruct participants on how to set realistic completion goals for art projects pursued during the workshop. Other topics will include how to constructively critique your own work and the work of others; and seek creative solutions to enhance the quality of your art projects.

The minimum age to take the class is 18 and maximum capacity is 10.

Scholarship opportunities

The application deadline for this year’s Mammoth Hospital Scholarships is April 30.

Applications are available at the hospital admissions desk, the Mammoth Library library front desk and the Cast Off. Completed applications, which shall include transcripts, recommendations, last year’s income summary and plans for the future, may be mailed to P.O. Box 1399, Attn. Suzanne Stokes or hand-delivered to the Mammoth Hospital Admissions Dept., marked “Scholarship.”
