On May 1 three members of Mammoth High School’s track team traveled to Antelope Valley College, having already qualified as individuals, to participate in the Desert Mountain League Finals. Participating high schools were Big Pine, Boron, Desert Christian, Lone Pine, Mammoth, Mojave, Silver Valley, Trona and Vasquez. In order to move to the next level in the state process, participants had to finish first in their event, or second or third with a qualifying time or mark.
Mammoth was represented by Amanda Kirkeby, Jody Meads and Toby Qualls. With just three athletes, Mammoth finished 6th in the team score in both the women and mens standings.
Mammoth Freshman Meads had an outstanding day, finishing first in both the 1600m and 3200 m events. Meads beat a very determined senior runner named Emily Kennedy, who in four years of running at Desert Christian, has dominated these events. Meads ran a personal best 1600m time of 5:31 and a 3200m time of 12:29.
Mammoth Junior Qualls finished second in the 1600m and first in the 3200m events, qualifying for both. Qualls times were 4:44 and 10:28.
Mammoth Freshman Amanda Kirkeby finished seventh in the 1600m run with a time of 6:27, seventh in the long jump, with a personal best mark of 12’-10,” and fifth in the high jump, with a jump of 4’0”.
Qualls and Meads will represent Mammoth and continue on into the CIF process, which begins May 12, in Carpinteria, Calif.
