According to
SkiRacing.com, freeskiing legend Glen Plake survived an avalanche on Nepal’s Mount Manaslu that reportedly killed at least 11 of his fellow mountaineers.
“The avalanche hit Camp III situated at an altitude of nearly 24,000 feet, as the climbers were heading toward the peak,” the article said. “There were at least 50 people from different expeditions on the mountain when the incident occurred.
“Extreme skiers Remy Lecluse and Greg Costa were reportedly among the dozen still missing Sunday.”
KTVN.com stated that the avalanche occurred at 4:45 Sunday morning.
In a report that Plake filed with EpicTV, he gave the following description: “Greg and I were in a tent together, Rémy was in another. It was 4:45 a.m. and I was in my sleeping bag with my headlamp on reading my devotional when we heard a roar. Greg looked at me and said, ‘That was a big gust of wind,’ then a second later, ‘No, that was an avalanche.’
“Then it hit us.
“I was swept 300 meters over a serac and down the mountain and came to a stop still in my sleeping bag, still inside the tent. We all went to sleep with avalanche transceivers on so I punched my way out of the tent and started searching.
“Searched for 10 minutes when I realized I was barefoot.
“Greg was using my down suit for a pillow and I found my suit, I found everything that was in my tent – camera, sleeping bag, ski boots, it was like someone had thrown my gear in the back of a pickup – but there was no sign of Greg. Rémy and his tent are nowhere to be found.”

Despite a raging snowstorm dumping more than two feet of powder on Mammoth Mountain, the Mammoth Invitational 2012, held from April 13-15, brought in over $500,000 directly benefitting the Mammoth Mountain Community Foundation.
With such snow legends as Glen Plake, Johnny Teller, Stacey Cook, and snowboarder Kelly Clark joining 25+ members of the U.S. National and Olympic Ski and Snowboard teams for three days of racing, fun, and frivolity, the event provided non-stop action benefitting a great cause.
“It’s been a banner year for us, with the invitational exceeding even our own expectations”, said Mark Brownlie, of the Mammoth Mountain Ski Area and the Mammoth Mountain Community Foundation. “We couldn’t have done it without our talented staff and volunteers from both the Mountain and the Foundation.” Austin Beutner, Founder of the Mammoth Mountain Community Foundation, called the event “an unqualified success.”
Highlights of the event included ski and snowboard races, Casino Royale night with World Series of Poker Champion Annie Duke, silent and live auctions, a biathlon, Awards Ceremony and Banquet Night featuring Luca Band and a Kid’s Cup race, all capped off with a closing breakfast.
