Mammoth Youth Football (ages 6-8) won its season opener on Aug. 25 by beating Trona 31-13.
Assistant Coach Jon Johnston said Trona is historically a very good team that has beaten Mammoth many years in a row, so the win was very satisfying.
Ryder Radcliffe and Ricky Johnson each scored twice for Mammoth. Danny Longo had the other touchdown.
Along the line, Johnston singled out the fine play of Alex Villalobos, Obed Cervantes and Jesse Dessert, son of Head Coach Curt Dessert.
Last year, said Johnston, Mammoth was the last team into the playoffs. This year? “We’re a championship contender.”
The team will test Johnston’s faith on Sept. 15 when it travels to face Big Bear, last year’s league champion.

The Mammoth Lakes Swim Team, the Mammoth Sharks, were victorious at a meet in South Lake Tahoe July 22-24.
The team brought 47 swimmers to the meet and competed against more than 20 teams from all over California. Mammoth and Bishop were the only two summer seasonal teams competing against year-round swimmers. Mammoth came home as the meet winner with more than 600 points beating out teams from the San Francisco, Santa Cruz and Napa areas, as well as teams from Reno, Sparks, Minden/Gardnerville, and more.
Many Mammoth athletes swam personal best times and brought home Individual High Point awards. High Point awards are given to the athletes who get the overall best results in their age group.
Ava Lazar was 2nd and Sara Mueller was 1st in the 6 and under girls category.
Jake Westfall was 2nd and Quentin LeFrancois 1st in the 6 and under boys category.
Ryan Furness was 2nd in the 7-8 year old Boy category. Ryan’s sister, Katrionna Furness, was 1st out of 9-10 year old girls. And Sydney Knadler was 3rd in a tight race for the 15-16 year old girl Category.
The Sharks’ next meet is Aug. 5-7 in Minden for the High Country League Championships. You can watch the Sharks compete against Bishop Swim Team at Whitmore Pool Saturday, Aug. 13 in their final competition of the summer.

The BBB serving Central California is pleased to announce that the McDonalds’ franchises serving Bishop, Lone Pine and Mammoth have been selected as the winner of the 2011 Ethics Awards for Marketplace Excellence for the Southern Central Valley in the large business category. The franchises are owned and operated by Lis and Kevin Mazzu.
The Mazzus officially received their award on behalf of McDonald’s at a recognition lunch on May 4 at The Petroleum Club, in Bakersfield.
The Ethics Awards is BBB’s annual award program that honors outstanding local for-profit companies that have demonstrated a commitment to ethical business practices, both in operations and in terms of integrity, reliability and responsiveness to employees, vendors and customers.
“The BBB Ethics Award is the symbol of the highest ethical standards a business can have,” said Blair Looney, CEO and president of the BBB. “We are proud to recognize these Valley companies for their continued commitment to quality, ethics and outstanding customer service.”
Each year, businesses are entered in local award competitions conducted by BBB’s in every region of the country. The winning entries from the Central California competition are then forwarded to the Council of Better Business Bureaus, the parent organization for the BBB network, for an international competition.
In 2010, both Willey Tile and Spherion were honored at the local level. Willey Tile Company was named as a finalist for the 2010 International Torch Awards, one of 18 companies being honored from around the United States and Canada. -Press Release

Local Johnny Teller won his first career World Cup ski cross event on Friday, Jan. 7 in St. Johann, Austria. Teller is now in the lead in the overall World Cup Ski Cross standings by 170 points.
Teller has come a long way in the last year after being placed last January on the non-injured reserve list for the 2010 Olympics, and working his way up in the World Cup events. In December, Teller won third in a World Cup event making him the first Mammoth local to make the podium at an event of this type.
Teller spends his summers turning wrenches at local Alpine Garage on Center Street.
