A contingent of runners from Mammoth’s own High Sierra Striders club competed in the First Annual Santa Barbara International Marathon and Relay on Sunday, Dec. 6.
The Striders fielded 3 relay teams and had 5 individual runners compete in the full marathon. According to Striders organizers, conditions for the first annual Santa Barbara Marathon were “perfect … 45 degrees at start time, little wind and clear skies.”
Highlights for relay runners included:
The HSS coed Relay Team of Andrew Kastor, Doug Will, Sherryl Taylor, Steve Ingram logged the 5th fastest relay time of day out of 200 relay teams.
And not to be outdone, the Mammoth Chicks all female team of Hilda Adler, Rosanne Higley, Sherilynne Will and Penny Bourne came in 12th out of 31 teams in their division.
And E.L. and Pat Smoogen’s Team Smoogen finished a marathon each in 4 hours 6 minutes.

And the California International Marathon in Sacramento also took place on Sunday. Mammoth Track Club’s Josh Cox finished 2nd, posting a personal best time of 2:13:51, and the High Sierra Striders’ Dan McDowell turned in an impressive 2:53:03.
MHS ROUNDUP: Boys Basketball snaps losing skein; JV Girls Soccer wins Garces tourney
The Boy’s Varsity Basketball team snapped a multi-year losing streak in its second game of the season, defeating Lee Vining 52-39.
“It feels real good,” said 2nd year coach Marvin Orrick, recording his first win. “This was by far our best team effort.”
The Huskies were led by the aggressive play of senior Martin Solorio who opened the third quarter with a 4-point play and finished the game with 17 points and 9 rebounds. Dalton Morley finished with 11 points and 4 steals. Kyle Heller and Jonas Brandt had 10 points each, Brandt adding 10 rebounds completing a double/double. Leading the defensive effort was Scott Somers with 14 rebounds.
If you want to see a team on the rise, catch the Huskies game versus Big Pine at home this Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. The Girls Varsity game starts at 4 p.m.
And the JV Girls Soccer team won the Garces Tournament in Bakersfield last weekend by winning all three games it played. The impressive tourney trophy has been placed in the display case at the high school.
Kristin King scored the lone goal in the decisive 1-0 contest.
The team roster includes Juniors Rebecca Cage, Samantha Knadler, Jisselle Kenny, Kristin King and Bailey Morley, Sophomores Jenni Villalpando, Cassandra Villalpando, Kassandra Montes, Jessi Harris, Ady Figueroa, Christy Guerrero and Sandy Grimaldo and Freshman Sydney Knadler.
The head coach is Brian Pennington, assisted by Tom Cage.
The varsity also plays next weekend in Bakersfield where more than 110 teams will compete. Last year Mammoth placed 4th in the Bronze division, losing its two final games by a goal and then by penalty kicks. This year, the squad moves up to the Silver division.
