ELECTION RESULTS: STRANGE BREW IN TOWN COUNCIL RACE
Measures M & U measure up for voters; Magit edges Gephart; Scholl re-elected
There were predictions and surprises in the race for Mammoth Lakes Town Council, and town voters apparently gave the electorate a little of both. Voters gave the nod to businessman Matthew Lehman, but also re-elected John Eastman, who many thought had seen his chances dwindle in recent weeks, and tapped the services of former Mayor and council member Rick Wood, who some had considered as a factor early on, but was arguably something of a dark horse.
The final tally was predictably fairly close, with another former Mayor, Kirk Stapp, nipping at Wood’s heels, and Dawn Vereuck, Tony Barrett (in his second Council bid), Sharon Clark and Allen Blumer all posting at least respectable, if not fully competitive results:
Mammoth Lakes Town Council:
Matthew Lehman 19.42%
John Eastman 15.77%
Rick Wood 13.80%
Kirk Stapp 13.07%
Dawn Vereuck 12.14%
Sharon Clark 11.36%
Tony Barrett 10.88%
Allen Blumer 3.55%
And both measures M and U both sailed through the election. The results for Measure M were a little tighter, but it still passed with a comfortable 11% margin.
Measure M:
YES 55.76%
NO 44.24%
Measure U:
YES 67.47%
NO 32.53%
In Mono County …
Supervisor District 1:
Larry Johnston 50.6%
Bill Sauser 49.4%
Supervisor District 4:
Tim Hansen 34.67%
Tim Fesko 32.73%
Renn Nolan 27.01%
Bobby Tems 5.60%
Expect a runoff in November between the “two Tims,” Hansen and Fesko.
Sheriff:
Rick Scholl 65.58%
Doug Northington 34.42%
Northington took the early lead, especially in the north county, but fortunes turned for Scholl, the incumbent, once the south county votes began coming in.
Mono Superior Court Judge:
Mark Magit 46.5%
Randy Gephart 43.1%
Therese Hankel 10.1%
Magit’s margin of victory may not be enough to prevent a runoff against Gephart in November. We’ll update you as the results move closer to certification.
Several candidates ran unopposed in various races, including Byng Hunt, incumbent for Supervisor District 2, Stacey Adler for Mono County Office of Education Superintendent, Jody Henning for Assessor and George Booth for Mono District Attorney.
Turnout (Mono County): 3,560 58.50%
