Road updates in Mono County

At its meeting last Monday, the Mono County Local Transportation Commission, LTC, highlighted several road updates that affect not only cyclists but all travelers along these routes. John Armstrong, public appointee on the LTC, as well as President of the Eastside Velo Club reported on the following.
As many are aware, the Scenic Loop road is now closed on the upper part of the highway and the old road is being ripped out to construct the new wider roadbed that will be significantly wider with 5 foot shoulders on both sides.
Highway 203 was swept by CalTrans late this year, but in the last week of June an excellent job of cleaning was done and the shoulders in both directions are perfect for cycling. Expect to see Hwy 203 being re-paved in August from 395 to Main Lodge.
A new smoother material will be applied to the southbound shoulder of U.S. 395 from Deadman to Crowley in summer 2011. Highway 120 is being worked on this summer and more work is scheduled for summer 2011. Plans are being prepared to have the Upper Rock Creek Road repaved, but this project may well be a couple of years away.
