Why Atlas shrugged

Dear Editor:

We read these days (what a concept) that nearly half of U.S. households do not pay federal income tax. But those millionaires & billionaires — who earn more than $250,000 — need to pay more? (I welcome a debate between Sen. Marco Rubio & Sen. Al Franken on taxes).

Now consider that at least 3 states (e.g. CA, IL & NY) considered “Progressive,” have multi-billion dollar annual budget deficits. Those state legislators are spending taxpayer dollars far exceeding revenues, making promises that they cannot keep.

“As GM goes, so goes the nation.” The federal government, under the “America I know” vision of President Obama, voided legitimate contracts between bondholders and the automaker. If you can void a bondholder contract, why not a union contract?

Finally, under one-party control of both branches of Congress, ObamaCare passed, as so eloquently stated by then House Speaker Pelosi, “so we would know what’s in it.” Presently more than 1,000 waivers have been granted to this historic legislation – and to its most vocal supporters! Rep Anthony Weiner (D-NY) comes to mind, as do SEIU, & the American Federation of Teachers.

And the fault for this criticism (the current state of the nation) rests with a Jewish woman who fled the Soviet purges of the Stalinism era, and a book she wrote some 50 years ago?

“Who is John Galt?” He is one of many Americans.

McMartin “shrugs” off Davis

Dear Editor:

Carolyn Davis “Absolutist” diatribe against the movie, “Atlas Shrugged” (Letters, “Producers and Parasites,” The Sheet, April 30) deserves an “Absolutist” response.

Her knee-jerk “Me-Society” example of Pre-Union & Regulation in 1850s USA, deserves the “We-Society” response of 1930s & 1940s Stalin & Mao.

Carolyn D’s ideally reasonable “society that cares about each other” would surely include Peace (bring the soldiers home to their families), Bread (government assistance) and Land (wealth redistribution).

But why is Carolyn “It Takes A Village” Davis more qualified to KNOW what’s best for you or me, and everyone else? Because her NARCISSISTIC EGO says so?

As usual, what’s best is somewhere in the Middle.

The “We-Society” Congress preferred by Davis kept their Cadillac Healthcare Plan and tax breaks for the rich. They are just as greedy as EVERYBODY else. Except in Davis’ Ideal Little World.

Oh, by the way, Peace-Bread-Land is the (Marxist) Lenin Doctrine of 1917. That didn’t work out too well for the Russian and Chinese people, did it?

Give me a (spring) break …

Dear Editor:

I am very upset with Canyon Lodge. [During spring break] we bought ski tickets for June Mountain, but changed our minds to go to Canyon Lodge. I could not believe you couldn’t exchange them. We were willing to pay the difference. Aren’t Mammoth and June Mountains owned by the same company? What difference does it make?

Girls soccer kicks out the kudos

Dear Editor:

Mammoth High School Girls Soccer Team would like to thank all of the people who helped make this past year of soccer possible. We especially want to thank Rusty Gregory, MMSA, Linda Dempsey and Chuck Lande of Chadmar for their generous contributions.

If it weren’t for these gracious people, our 2010-2011 soccer season would not have existed. The money they donated allowed us to travel to games, pay for our new uniform and provide us with soccer equipment. We would also like to thank the fans that took time out of their days in order to show support at the games. It all contributed to a very successful season.

With great appreciation,
MHS Girls Soccer Team and Coaches Pennington, Cage and Bair
