On Tuesday, May 17, 120 students at Mammoth Elementary School participated in the 2nd annual Math-a-thon, a math contest geared toward 3rd through 5th grade – yet advanced 2nd graders can compete as 3rd graders.

The contest consisted of the following 3 rounds: Speed, Mental Math and Problem Solving. The Speed round is a 10×10 multiplication table the students complete for time. During Mental Math, students answer 40 questions in a slide show format at a quick pace. Mental Math problems must be done “in your head” and working the problem out on paper is not allowed. The final round, Problem Solving, is 20 challenging arithmetic and word problems. Students compete for top places in each individual round and the three rounds are also combined for top overall awards.
