Mammoth girls volleyball digs in
Varsity beats Bishop; team continues “Dine-out” fundraising
In Mammoth High School Girls Varsity Volleyball, the Lady Huskies lost to Vasquez in four games.
Mammoth took Game 1, 25-23 with what Coach Megan Guffey termed “good execution.”
The Huskies took it on the chin for the next three games, though, 15-25, 21-25 and 16-25, which Guffey said was due in part to “too many missed serves.”
The JV also dropped three games.
Bishop beats JV, but not Varsity
Mammoth JV narrowly lost to Bishop after going a third set, but the Broncos didn’t fare nearly as well against a determined Mammoth Varsity, which soundly beat Bishop in 4 sets.
The Lady Huskies started out in what appeared to be trouble, dropping the first game 24-26, but rallied back to take the next three straight games 25-19, 25-19 and 26-24.
Coach Guffey seemed a bit recharged following the Varsity’s win against a tough Bishop Broncos squad.
“This match was outstanding with some fabulous, long, hard fought rallies and great saves,” Guffey enthused.
“Both teams played exceptional volleyball! Mammoth stuck together as a team and worked point by point for the win. In short, the girls played great!”
Guffey added the team had recently changed some of its rotation to accommodate for certain weaknesses, and also to cater to the team’s strengths.
“We really did not have much time to work on it, but the girls got out there and played volleyball. They took ownership of where they were on the court, as well as knowing where to go once they entered and re-entered the match.
Guffey praised all the JV and Varsity team members.
Arely Bramona-Fierro (SR) got in 5 digs, 6 assists, 1 kills and 3 aces.
Jessie Harris (SR), who Guffey said “played one of her best, if not the best game I have seen her play,” had 40 receptions with no errors, 3 digs, 1 assist, 9 kills, 4 blocks and a pair of aces.
Kristen Sigmen (JR) received similar high marks from Guffey, and logged 16 receptions, 8 digs, 5 kills, 1 block and 2 aces.
Sydney Knalder (JR) brought some heat, helping drive home the Huskies’ win with 7 receptions, 7 digs, 5 kills and 2 blocks.
Cassidy Morris (SO) kicked in 1 dig, 4 assists, 16 serves and logged no errors.
And Kelly Berger (SO) put up 5 receptions, 6 digs, 7 kills, 2 blocks and 4 big aces.
The Volleyball team is in the middle of its “Dine out” fundraising season, and gave a shout out to everyone who supported the team and ate out at Burger’s on Tuesday, Sept. 27.
The next Dine out opportunity is this coming Wednesday, Oct. 5. Eat lunch/dinner at Roberto’s and part of the proceeds will go directly to help the Girls Volleyball team.
The Lady Huskies next game is this coming Tuesday, Oct. 4 at home against Boron. JV plays at 4 p.m., Varsity plays at 5 p.m. –Press Release
