Veterans Day 11-11-11 event

The Mono County Veterans Day Committee invites all Veterans to a special celebration hosted by the Mammoth Lakes Fire Department, on Nov. 11 at Station #1 in Mammoth Lakes. Breakfast will be served at 9 a.m., followed by a special ceremony from 10-11 a.m.

Call the Mammoth Unified School District Office at 760.934.6802 ext. 511 with any questions or to RSVP your attendance.The Veterans Day Committee is made up of members from: Mono County, Mono County Sheriff’s Dept., Mono County Office of Education, the Town of Mammoth Lakes, Mammoth Lakes Fire Department, Mammoth Lakes Police Department, Mammoth Unified School District, Mammoth Lakes Rotary Clubs, Mammoth Lakes Lions Club and Disabled Sports Eastern Sierra.

Also, in honor of Veterans Weekend, the Inyo National Forest will waive day-use fees at South Tufa in the Mono Basin National Forest Scenic Area and Schulman Grove in the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest, Nov. 11-13.

Meet local author Boucher

Eastern Sierra novelist Debbie Boucher will give an “Author Talk” at the Mammoth Library on Tuesday, Nov. 8 @ 6 p.m. Boucher, a retired bilingual educator, has been writing for more than 10 years. Her first novel, ‘Back To Normal,” was published in January 2010 and received an Honorable Mention from ForeWard Magazine. Her second book, “Millennial Fears,” was recently released. Spolin Players back in town!

Mammoth Lakes Repertory Theatre announces the return of The Spolin Players, the seasoned improvisational comedy players who’ve been working together for more than 20 years, for two shows on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 11 and 12, at 7 p.m. nightly in the Edison Theatre. One of the Spolin Players, Gail Matthius, recently showed off her other talents in the title role of “Always, Patsy Cline.”

“Gail’s enthusiasm allows us to get a world-class group like the Spolin Players to perform in Mammoth,” noted MLRP Artistic Director Shira Dubrovner. Matthius is a former Saturday Night Live cast member, and has done numerous TV commercials, radio spots, movies and TV series and animation voice roles.

Rounding out the cast are fellow film, TV and stage actors Pat Musick (House), Donna Du Bain (The Groundlings), David McCharen (Shelley Duvall’s Faerie Tale Theatre), Danny Mann (Heathcliff and Camp Candy), Jim Staahl (King of Queens and Curb Your Enthusiasm) and John Mariano (Desperate Housewives and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia).

Tickets for the Evening of Improv with the Spolin Players are $12, students and seniors just $10.  The Spolin Players will also teaching two 2 ½ hour classes of “madness, mayhem and learning” for a limited number of students on Saturday, Nov 12.

Guffey on display

Works of local photographer (and MHS grad and now Varsity Volleyball Coach) Megan Guffey are on display in the Ellie Randol Reading Room at Mammoth Lakes Library through the month of November.

Guffey’s work is infused by a love of the Sierra and its ever-changing sky and landscape.
