MHS volleyball had some exciting matches over the weekend.
Fans in Mammoth were treated to a great weekend of volleyball as the Mammoth Huskies took on Desert High School on Friday night, Sept. 27 and Desert Christian on Saturday afternoon, Sept. 28 at Mammoth High School.
In the first match the JV Huskies beat the Scorpions 25-17, 25-23. Mammoth’s Varsity took on a very tall and talented Desert team winning a thrilling see-saw 2 hour match 20-25, 25-18, 17-25, 25-17 and 15-9. “We had a great strategy that the team executed to perfection,” said Mammoth Head Coach John Morris. “We knew that everyone would have to be on their game and that’s just what we got.”
On Saturday morning Mammoth’s JV again took care of business by beating Desert Christian 25-17 and 27-25. Strong contributions were made in both matches by Leslie Galvan with 10 aces, McKenna Smith with 8 aces, setter Carly Margulies with 10 assists, and outside hitter Lex Brode with 4 kills.
The Varsity Huskies lost to the Knights in another up and down 2 hour plus 5 set match 22-25, 25-18, 18-25, 25-23 and 12-15. The last set went right down to the wire with the Knights pulling out the win on the last 3 points. “I am so proud of our team,” Morris said. “To ask a team to play back-to-back 5 set matches in less than 18 hours against that level of competition, and to have them play with so much intensity, just goes to show how much we have improved this year.”
The Huskies were led in both matches by libero Kira Shultz with 47 serve receptions, setter Cassidy Morris with 48 assists, middle hitter/blocker Kelly Berger with 18 blocks and 22 kills, middle hitter/blocker Callie Mowat with 15 blocks and 12 kills, and Amanda Kirkeby with 22 digs on defense.
The huskies have a busy weekend upcoming with matches next Thursday-Saturday (Oct. 3-5) at Desert, Silver Valley and Boron.
