High hopes for Husky football Homecoming

The Mammoth Huskies take on the Excelsior Charter Eagles in a huge homecoming game at Gault-McClure Field Friday, Oct. 18! Tonight’s Desert Mountain League match-up is a key game for the Huskies to win if they are to make a run for a playoff spot this season. It has been a long time since the Huskies even thought about making a playoff run but this could be the season. The Dawgs have been fierce on defense all season holding their own against Boron and Bishop who both run the same Delta Wing Offense as the Eagles will tonight. The Huskies can move the ball in the air and on the ground and with Ricky Cuellar and the special teams in high gear the Dawgs can score.

The Huskies 1-1 in DML play this season are coming off an impressive win over a non-league opponent in Einstien last week but fell to number 6 in the rankings as Vasquez evened its DML record to 2-2 and moved into the 5th spot last week. Tonight’s opponent, the Excelsior Eagles, are 2-1 in league play and ranked 3rd are coming off a big win against Silver Valley this past week as well. The Huskies and the Eagles both lost to Desert, currently #2 in the DML, and both have wins over Riverside Prep. Neither the Huskies nor the Eagles have squared off against Vasquez yet, the Huskies face them next week, but the Eagles still have a scary date with #1 Boron, who is currently steamrolling the DML, as their last game of the season. There is no doubt that tonight’s game is the biggest game of the season for the Huskies so far, actually the biggest game of the past few years. The Huskies need to win tonight’s game to keep their playoff hopes alive. The key to winning the game for the Huskies will be preventing turnovers.
