Mammoth volleyball hangs on at the top
The Mammoth Girls Volleyball teams completed a mostly positive weekend road trip with matches against Desert Christian, Vasquez and Mojave. The JV Huskies swept the weekend beating Desert Christian 25-12 and 25-14, Vasquez 26-14 and 25-18, and gaining a forfeit against Mojave which has dropped its JV program this year. The young Huskies improved to 11-2 in Desert Mountain league play, tied for first place with Desert High school (no playoffs for JV). Mammoth’s JV takes on Lone Pine on Nov. 6 to close out their season.
The Varsity Huskies started the weekend with a chance to retain solo first place in the DML. Unfortunately they ran straight into a very determined Desert Christian team and lost 18-25, 21-25 and 24-26. “The Knight’s played probably the best match we have seen all year,” said Mammoth Head Coach John Morris. “We did not play well and they really made us pay for our mistakes.” The loss put Mammoth into a 3 way tie for the DML lead with Desert Christian and Desert. Mammoth rebounded from the loss with a sweep of the Vasquez Mustangs 25-23, 25-23 and 25-14 on Fridaynight in Acton. “I think we were still a bit rattled from the loss to DC and the match with Vasquez was not pretty,” said Morris. ” But we really needed the win to stay with the other teams at the top of the league so it still felt good.” A notable performance was turned in by Sophomore middle hitter Callie Mowat who had 10 kills on 20 attempts. The Huskies completed the road trip with a 4 game victory over Mojave, 25-19, 22-25, 25-15, 25-8 in which all 15 of the Huskies saw playing time.
Mammoth’s Varsity record now stands at 11-2 as well. “If we can get past Lone Pine on Wednesday we will be league co-champions, something that has not been accomplished in 13 years,” said Morris. “Our program has had a amazing year and we hope to do well in the CIF playoffs.” Playoff bracket selections will be completed on Saturday, Nov. 9 with the first matches played on Nov. 12.
