Mammoth resident Tyler Flanagan pled guilty in early February to charges relating to a domestic abuse allegation in November of last year.
Flanagan, 20, was arrested on Nov. 16 after the Mammoth Lakes Police Department (MLPD) was informed by Flanagan’s former girlfriend, aged 17, that he had assaulted her the evening before.
According to MLPD Chief Dan Watson, evidence suggested Flanagan struck her and pulled hair from her head. Flanagan also allegedly ‘head-butted’ her, and held her down against her will.
Assistant D.A. David Anderson explained that the Mono County District Attorney’s Office charged Flanagan with four counts: PC 273.5(a) Corporal Injury to Spouse/Cohabitant (Felony); PC 273d(a) Corporal Injury to a Child (Felony); PC 236 False Imprisonment (Felony); and PC 273.6(b) Disobeying a Court Order with Physical Injury (Misdemeanor).
Flanagan had a prior conviction for Corporal Injury to a Child, after an altercation with the same victim earlier in 2013. He was on felony probation for that offense.
Flanagan ultimately pled guilty to PC 273d(a) Corporal Injury to a Child as a felony, receiving the maximum term of six years in prison, and PC 273.6(b) Disobeying a Court Order with Physical Injury as a misdemeanor, for which he received the maximum of one year in prison.
PC 273.5(a) Corporal Injury to Spouse/Cohabitant and PC 236 False Imprisonment were dismissed as part of the plea bargain, Anderson said.
Pursuant to PC 1170(g) under Assembly Bill 109, Flanagan will split the seven years of prison time, serving four years in the Mono County Jail, and three years under mandatory supervision upon his release.
Flanagan’s prison term cuts short his rise to fame in snowboarding slopestyle and big air events. According to the Dew Tour website, Flanagan’s family moved from North Carolina to Mammoth Lakes after Flanagan showed a talent for snowboarding. Flanagan took home fifth place in X-Games Snowboard Big Air in 2010, and the bronze medal in X-Games Snowboard Slopestyle in 2011. He was supported by major sponsors, including Volcom, Rockstar Energy, Thirtytwo, Grenade, Skullcandy, Etnies, and Mammoth Mountain Ski Area.
