Volleyball hangs tough
The Mammoth Huskies volleyball team completed a tough road trip this past weekend with matches at league leading Desert and Boron.
On Friday night, the JV Huskies won a close contest at Desert 25-21 and 25-22. Caitlin Young had a strong performance with a service ace and 4 kills. The varsity Huskies began their match very flat according to head coach John Morris. Desert boasts two 6-foot plus middle hitters who both jump touch well over 10 feet and dominated Mammoth in the first two sets. The Huskies went down 6-0 in the third set and it looked as though the match would be a sweep for the Scorpions. Somehow, the Huskies rallied to a 27-25 victory, then rolled over Desert in the 4th set 25-16. Morris commented that the 4th set was the best his team had played all year. Unfortunately the Huskies could not keep the fire going and dropped the 5th set 8-15 and the match.
Desert is currently undefeated in DML play but the Huskies get another shot at the Scorpions at home later in the month. Taylor Sanders and Jade Woo had strong matches with 15 and 11 kills respectively, and Sierra Gilfoy added 41 assists. Middle blockers Amanda Kirkeby and Callie Mowat played very well despite being matched up against Desert’s very tall counterparts.
On Saturday the JV huskies cruised past Boron 25-19 and 25-12, and the varsity rebounded with a straight set victory over the Bobcats 25-23, 25-20 and 26-24. Taylor Sanders again led the Huskies on offense with 13 kills.
Tuesday, the Huskies hosted Silver Valley at home. Both the JV and Varsity teams cruised to wins. The JV won 25-13, 25-20 and were led by Zenya Simeon with 7 aces, 3 kills and 3 digs.
The Varsity won 25-15, 25-11, 25-17 with strong performances by Amanda Kirkeby with 6 aces and 5 kills and by Taylor Sanders with 3 aces and 5 kills. Both matches saw all members of the Husky squads play.
Mammoth gets a break until late next week with tough matches against Vasquez and Desert Christian.
