MHS boys basketball routs Big Pine in home opener
With the graduation of All-League big man Fox Kailiawa, 2nd team All-Leaguer Cole Presso,n and four other seniors, one would think it is a rebuilding year for MHS Boys Basketball.
One would think.
Watching Tuesday’s opening win vs. Big Pine, it’s clear this team has the potential to be quite good. They’ve got some size, they’re athletic and talented, and as Coach Robbie Presson joked, “Even Marvin Orrick (father of starters Steven and Christian Orrick) was satisfied with how much we ran on Tuesday.”
While the Orricks man the backcourt, the frontcourt starters are Juniors Mario Rios, Tyler Nollen and Martin Thompson.
The first two players off the bench are Seniors Stephen Haakana and Jesse Worden.
On Tuesday, Sophomore Christian Orrick led the way with 16 points. Rios chipped in 13 and Nollen had 9 points to go with 10 rebounds and 6 assists. Steven Orrick had 8 points, six assists and six steals.
As Coach Presson said, ”We have the ingredients … rebound, outlet to the Orricks and here we go … we just need to keep focused and healthy.”
Presson’s staff this year includes Asst. Head Coach Andrew Jones, Marty Thompson and Fox Kailiawa.
This team is fun to watch. Catch them again this Friday night @ home vs. Immanuel Christian. Tip off is at 6 p.m.
