Letters to the Editor
Playing ostrich
Dear Editor:
In response to Gregg Martino’s letter of June 19:
I’m very flattered you consider me to be a part of yet another very long- winded justification and rationalization for your anti-home rental movement.
Here’s what the Trails HOA meeting minutes from March reflect: That Kathy Cage, representing the Knolls HOA, came to ask for money (for attorney’s fees) and support for the Let Mammoth Decide initiative.
The Trails HOA took it under advisement, but made no decision to support or not support Cage.
I am a resident of the Trails. I am not on the board. I think it was fairly safe of me to infer the push for the initiative came from the Knolls based upon the minutes from the meeting.
FYI. It’s called the “internet.” Al Gore invented it. Websites like VRBO, Airbnb, Home Away, Uber represent ithe future of travel and the new norm. It’s growing by the minute! Nobody wants to stay in a rundown 30-year old condo anymore; they are coming to a neighborhood near you. So you can try to ram through your initiative, post your people outside of Vons, go door to door, but the real issue here is enforcement and your initiative doesn’t address any of it.
The future is here. We can waste a lot of time and money trying to fight it, or we can embrace it. Playing ostrich is no help.

“Free” money?
Dear Editor:
Interesting article [on the $1.5 million Elementary school parking lot project]. A couple of quick thoughts.
Grants aren’t free money; we the taxpayers are contributing to the cost of the work. Improvements are always nice, but are they always necessary?
The article quotes District representatives on the number of children who are driven to school – a national and apparently local trend. Didn’t the perfectly good sidewalks on Meridian just get ripped out to install better bike lanes that can be used to ride bikes to school? To date, I have seen one bicycle using the lane.
Bike/walk lanes are also being redone. Not that any of them needed repair, but the work at the school evidently triggered the need.
Isn’t it easy to spend money when it is a grant? Of course it is. It is “free” money. Isn’t it?

Crowley Lake
New Crowley concession building
Dear Editor:
Mono County Service Area #1 (CSA 1) would like to thank the following employees for our new restroom/concession building at the Crowley Lake Ball Field.
The lead person on the job is John Hauter. The Board appreciates John’s dedication to making this building as pleasing to the eye as possible.
The other crew members who also did an outstanding job are: Jason Davenport, Don Nunn and Tony Iniques, and Supervisor Claude Fiddler.
The bathrooms are now open 24 hours, 7 days a week. We ask that everyone who uses these new facilities use them with respect.
The CSA 1 board is committed to maintaining this beautiful new building and has budgeted $5,000.00 yearly to pay for the water supplied by Mountain Meadows Mutal Water Co. and to maintain and clean the building. There is a drinking fountain on the east side of the building, a recycle bin on the west side, and a frost free hose bib on the west side to water down the infield when and if Little League decides to have their games there. There are 3 new picnic tables (one ADA) and will be 3 mounted BBQ’s, and 7 shade trees using recycled water from the well.
The CSA 1 board is thankful to Joe Blanchard up in Bridgeport who spearheaded this project. We would also like to thank the Mono County Board of Supervisors for giving their approval for the CSA 1 board to fund this project, as well as Mammoth Unified School District Board Members for their approval of the project, as it is school district property that Mono County leases.
The CSA 1 board meets the fourth Tuesday of every month at 5:30 p.m. at the Crowley Lake Community Center. We welcome your ideas and input.
Our next big project will be the Crowley Lake Skate Park. If you are interested in fundraising, donating materials, time, or money, please contact John Connolly at owensdrylake@hotmail.com or Kim McCarthy at sagehill@schat.net.
