Will former Mammoth Mayor Matthew Lehman come dressed for success at the All-American Picnic?

The Village at Mammoth is adding an all-new activity this Fourth of July weekend to spice up the town’s offerings. The new event, an “All-American Picnic,” will run from 2-7 p.m. on Saturday, July 4, featuring a variety of chefs grilling classics like hotdogs and hamburgers, as well as providing fresh-baked pies and desserts, accompanied by live musical entertainment.

“We’re doing this because every July 4, no matter what day it falls on, we have the Lions Club Pancake Breakfast in town, then the parade, and then everyone goes to Crowley,” said Village Events Manager Robert Richards. “For those that don’t, there’s really not a lot going on in town … We thought we’d try something new.”

Picnic chefs include Matt Toomey of Toomey’s, Kristin Broumas and Michael Lish of Community Skis, and chefs from the Village’s newest restaurant 53, among others.
The All-American Picnic will also boast a Mojito and Bloody Mary bar.

The event will feature a DJ mash-up with DJ Channa and DJ Science from 2-5 p.m., followed by a concert with Howlin’ Dog, featuring Orphan Jon and the Abandoned, from 5-7 p.m.

“We want people to have a really chill time and enjoy great eating,” said Richards. “It’ll be a real sit down, put your feet up picnic.”
The new All-American Picnic is just one of many Fourth of July events hosted in the Village.

Sunday will kick off with the Ducky Races at 11 p.m. (race a rubber duck to benefit the Mammoth Swim Team, which receives 100 percent of the sales), followed by the infamous Chihuahua Races at 1 p.m. Richards said there should be about 1,000 duckies in this year’s Ducky Races; the Chihuahua Races will feature 16 lucky dogs in a full bracket race.

“It gets kind of wild out there,” Richards said of the latter races. “Get a good spot on the bleachers so you can root for your favorite dog.”

Starting at 2 p.m., kids can enjoy crafts and face painting, plus music by DJ Channa and DJ Science, while Stilt Circus performers roam the Village until a 20-minute stage show at 8:40 p.m.

Band Mojo Green will perform at 6 p.m., and the Village fireworks show will begin at 9 p.m.

“It’s gonna be a little bit larger this year,” said Richards. “We’ll see how people like it.”

And if Fourth of July weekend is stormy, Richards said that won’t stop the fun in the Village. “We’ll just continue on, so don’t think we’re gonna get rained out,” he laughed.
