Make space for creativity
At the Makerspace laboratory in the Mammoth Lakes Library, participants are limited only by their imaginations. Adults and kids alike can come in to learn how to use tools, like a sewing machine or Drumel tool. The centerpiece of the space is a 3D printer, which needs to be replaced. Donations for a new printer or any materials are gladly accepted—contact Taylor Kumlue at 760.934.4777 for more information.
Taylor Kumlue, Librarian and Makerspace wrangler, explained that for some kids, the library is the only place they have to go after school beside hanging out at Starbucks. Kumlue said kids and parents alike love the program. Some kids like it so much, their parents make them do their homework first and reward them with a trip to the Makerspace after. The program is so popular, its hours had to be extended. Some kids were in tears that the space wasn’t open longer.
Creativity and imagination have been found to be great learning tools; opening the receptor pathways in the brain. In other words, making stuff is good for everybody.
“I love to see what the kids come up with,” Kumlue said. “It blows me away.”
