Hilde Ruland and Max Riegg

Hilde Ruland, Miriam Ruland, and Max Riegg wrap up 20 years at the Joseph House Inn

By Gayla Wolfe

My interview with Max Riegg and his wife Hilde Ruland at the Joseph House Inn began with, “Would you like a glass of wine?” I said, “Sure.”

That’s the style at the Joseph House Inn: comfort, culture, class and care.

After 20 years here, in this garden paradise, it’s time to move on. Their choice is an upscale retirement community in Reno, Nevada. Hilde, the optimistic one, is looking forward to the shopping dining, and theatre. However, she admits tearfully, this move is “tough,” much tougher than her pioneering moves of the past.

Hilde was born in 1932, in Tier, Germany. She married Rudi Ruland and had two daughters, also born in Germany. Miriam was born in 1954, and Andrea in 1957. The family came to the US in 1969. She said they had a one year visa, and never went back. Rudi had his own business (hydraulic pressure machines).
