ARC’TERYX TO BRING BACKCOUNTRY ACADEMY TO MAMMOTH
Mammoth Lakes, known for its rugged terrain and strong outdoor community, is about to welcome a world-class event that will excite both seasoned adventurers and those looking to get out in the backcountry for the first time.
Arc’teryx, the renowned technical apparel brand, is bringing its Backcountry Academy to Mammoth for the first time from March 7-9, 2025. This unique event is designed to educate, inspire, and connect participants with nature while embracing the distinct culture of Mammoth.
Mammoth residents will have direct access to Arc’teryx’s highly respected backcountry education program, hosted last year in Whistler, Canada. Chris Benchetler, Arc’teryx athlete and Mammoth Lakes local said, “I’m beyond excited to see the Arc’teryx Backcountry Academy come to Mammoth for the first time. This community has a deep respect for the mountains, and we’re lucky to have some of the best terrain for backcountry exploration. It’s great to have an event that brings together local adventurers and provides the chance to learn from world-class athletes and guides. This Academy will help foster skills and a deeper connection to the mountains we call home.”
What makes this different?
Arc’teryx Backcountry Academy stands out by offering a combination of certified guides and direct instruction from Arc’teryx professional athletes, such as Michelle Parker and Craig Murray. Participants get hands-on experience from world class athletes who live and breathe backcountry adventures. From backcountry skiing to avalanche awareness, the clinics are designed to accommodate all skill levels, whether you’re a beginner or an expert.
“At Arc’teryx we place huge importance on listening to and learning from our local partners, athletes and the outdoor community. Mammoth has always been on our radar,” said Monika Tesiorowski, Brand Experience Lead – Arcteryx.
Community ties
Mammoth residents can engage with the Academy beyond just attending clinics. Film nights during Backcountry Academy will be held at local venues, and will feature both Arc’teryx productions and local spotlights, with guest speakers who have deep ties to the Mammoth outdoor scene.
Programming includes the Academy Music Series, which will bring après performances and late-night shows following each day of clinics. This year’s Backcountry Academy will see the Vendor Village, in the heart of Mammoth, this will be a bustling hub of activity, featuring top-tier sponsor stalls, gear demos, and giveaways.
Tailored to Mammoth
Arc’teryx has worked closely with Sierra Mountain Guides and Mammoth Resort Ski School to develop a diverse lineup of clinics. Courses will cover a wide range of skills, from foundational backcountry safety to advanced splitboarding techniques. By partnering with local experts, the Academy ensures that participants are learning techniques suited to Mammoth’s specific terrain and conditions.
Building a Lasting Culture
By offering accessible education—tickets for clinics will be priced at $185—the Academy ensures that more people can gain the confidence and skills to explore the backcountry safely. Beyond the event, the Academy is designed to foster lasting connections among participants, encouraging a sense of community that extends beyond the weekend.
All clinic information will go live on November 19, 2024 with clinic sales open from November 27, 2024.
Commitment to Stewardship
Participants will not only learn essential backcountry skills but will also be educated on responsible land use. Arc’teryx’s ReBird program will also be onsite, offering gear care, repairs, and sustainable purchasing options. The focus is on ensuring that every participant leaves with a deeper understanding of how to protect the natural spaces they love to explore.
