Eastern Sierra ice skating
Locals took to the ice during the holidays, when cold temps made for great skating on Laurel Pond, Grant Lake, Crowley Lake, the Alkali Ponds, and Farmers Pond, among others.
As always, “front country” ice skaters should come prepared with ice screws to test ice thickness, ice picks, a throw bag, rope, and warm change of clothes. Don’t skate on ice that’s less than three inches thick, and be aware that there are faults and thin spots in the ice that, regardless of these precautions, can still be dangerous. Ice can be thinner around rocks, where streams come into the lake, and near sunny shores.
