Keone Tyau of Wilmar won this year’s Fred Hall Fishing Derby with a 7 pound, 3 ounce big boy caught at Lake Mary. Tyau will take home $1,500 worth of fishing treasures, from rods and reels to gift certificates. Not to be confused with the grand-daddy of all sport shows in Southern California, the Fred Hall Sport Show that draws hundreds of thousands, the Fred Hall Father’s Day Fishing Derby is a small-town homage from a son to his father. The event is sponsored by Bart Hall, Fred’s son. Fred had brought Bart to the Eastern Sierra since he was an infant.“The Fred Hall Shows are my life but the Eastern Sierra is my passion,” Bart said. “I travel and fish all over the world and there are very many very special places on this planet, but when I want to relax and get back to my roots I come back to the Eastern Sierra.” The derby was a biggest fish take all event and the weigh-in took place at Rick’s Sport Center. The fishing had to be done in the Mammoth Lakes Basin.
