    Casey (Lennie) and Gill (George).

“Of Mice and Men,” the latest Mammoth Lakes Repertory Theater production directed by Shira Dubrovner, opened at the Edison  Theatre in Mammoth on Thursday.

The Steinbeck classic, set in the hardscrabble Depression-era, stars the unlikely itinerant duo of Rob Gill as the clever and sneaky George and Tim Casey as his strong-as-an-ox, dimwitted companion Lennie.

Given it’s Steinbeck, expect healthy doses of longing, philosophy, tragedy.

If only we could all be satisfied like Lennie to dream of spending our lives raising bunny rabbits.

Of course, Lennie’s the last guy in the world you’d want raising rabbits … or anything for that matter.

As for George, he says, “A guy feels free if he ain’t got a job … if he’s not hungry.”

So George is pretty clever at minimizing work and maximizing food … interesting that he makes no reference to his love of skiing.

The set, built by Casey is pretty clever. There are so many curtains and doors it’s like you’re watching an onion getting peeled back. You forget how small the space actually is.

Others in the cast include Jason Crockett as Skinner, the foreman; Jeff Frome as Candy, Sean Reitman as Curly and Lesley-Anne Hoxie as Curly’s wife, Bob McCollum as Crooks, Rick Phelps as the Boss, Mike Aguirre as Carlson and Urmas Franosch as Whit.

Tickets are available online at www.brownpapertickets.com. Prices are $20 for adults, $18 for seniors and students and $10 for children under age 14. Tickets at the door are $22 apiece. Showtimes are 7 p.m. Thursday-Saturday and 4 p.m. Sunday.
