On October 1, the Mammoth High School cross-country team hosted the Desert League Cross Country Invitational at Shady Rest Park in Mammoth Lakes.

The start of the girl’s race was bitter cold and the winds were blowing hard, but that did not keep Olympian Deena Kastor from shooting off the starting gun. From the very start, the Mammoth Lakes Girls’ team took control of the race as sophomore Izavva Herrera passed three Desert Christian runners at the last mile to secure first place with a time of 23:27. Herrera was followed by Alexia Craven (5th), Connie Moyer (10th), Lynn Regelbrugge (15th), Hannah Linnaweaver (18th), and Denise Apodaca (22nd). The final score (low being best): Mammoth 48, Desert Christian 57, Vasquez 85, Desert 122, Silver Valley 126, and Boron 151.

In the Boys’ race, Desert Christian, one of the best teams in CIF, dominated. Mammoth’s team performance was highlighted by Senior Perry Moyer, who placed 7th with a time of 20:02. Guy La Borde followed Moyer in 8th, Jeremy Laguna (14th), Justin Okomoto (16th), and Jared Mahler (21st). The final score: Desert Christian 15, Mammoth 57, Vasquez 85, Desert 122, Silver Valley 126, and Boron 151.

Last week, both teams traveled to Silver Valley for yet another Desert League showdown with five schools. Once again Izavva Herrera led the Huskies with a 3rd place finish, followed by Alexa Craven (4th), Melanie Moyer (12th), Allison Weber (14th), Lynn Regelbrugge (16th), and Denise Apodoca (32nd). The Mammoth High School Girls’ beat Desert Christian by just one point, 49-50.

The Boys’ finished second once again to Desert Christian. Top results were Perry Moyer (8th), La Borde (11th) and Jerry Mahler (12th).

Both the girls’ and boys’ team will travel to Mt. Sac for the Mt. Sac Invitational this Friday and will compete against 35 teams from around Southern California. The team will then travel to the League Championships at Desert Christian the following week. The League Championships will determine which teams qualify for the CIF prelims on November 14th. The CIF finals follow on November 21st.
