MHS Volleyball advances in CIF
MHS Girls Volleyball won its opening round CIF playoff game on Tuesday with a win on its home court versus St. Bernard. The final was decisive: 25-6, 25-9, 25-19.
Callie Mowat had 2 aces, 4 blocks and 13 kills; Taylor Sanders 8 kills; Kira Shultz 2 aces, 3 kills; McKenna Smith 3 aces, 25 assists.
On Thursday, the team traveled to Katella for its second round match. If Mammoth wins (it’s seeded higher than Katella) and Summit defeats Azusa (Summit is also seeded higher), Mammoth would host Summit this Saturday. Coach John Morris said game time would be sometime between 5 and 7 p.m., but given it’s a weekend, more likely 5 p.m.
Controlled burn scare
Mammoth Lakes residents grew concerned after smoke from a US Forest Service controlled burn in the Lakes Basin billowed above the town on Friday, Nov. 6.
According to Victor Guillen, Assistant Fire Engine Operator 21 for the U.S. Forest Service, who was the trainee overseeing the project, Friday’s burn covered 39 acres of brush piles left from thinning lodgepole and red fir trees east of Twin Lakes.
The project was listed on the Mono County Sheriff’s Facebook page prior to the first burn, and announced on local radio stations, but the USFS still received several calls from concerned citizens reporting the smoke.
Guillen said this kind of reaction was not uncommon. “We try to announce it as much as we can, but you know, it’s right in town, so obviously people see it and get concerned.”
No Shave November
Mammoth Hospital is proud to be participating in “No Shave November,” a month-long journey encouraging participants to forgo shaving and grooming in order to raise cancer awareness. “For No Shave November we are honoring the memory of Dr. Tomi Bortolazzo,” said Dr. Craig Burrows, Chief Medical Officer at Mammoth Hospital. “In her career in Urology, Dr. Bortolazzo dedicated herself to the diagnosis and management of all Urologic conditions, including bladder cancer and prostate cancer. She always went above and beyond what was required to make certain that her patients received everything they needed. It only seems fitting that we do what we can to continue her fight.”
The goal of No Shave November is to grow awareness by embracing our hair, which many cancer patients lose, and letting it grow wild and free. Please join us in this endeavor. Don’t shave all of November, and donate to Mammoth Hospital’s Cancer Outreach fund.
Mammoth Hospital’s Cancer Outreach Program provides support, resources and financial assistance to cancer patients living and working in Mono County. To donate please visit https://secure.acceptiva.com/?cst=b29db8. For more info, please call Bubby Greene at 760.924.4128.
