Crowley graffiti artist comes forward
On Dec, 17, as a result of traditional and social media coverage, a Crowley resident came forward and admitted responsibility for the graffiti. The depiction was not done recently and was intended an expression of art, not to deface or damage any property. The resident stated this was a teenage indiscretion and in hindsight was a poor decision. The reported crime of vandalism is out of the statute of limitations.
The Mono County Sheriff’s Office appreciates the community response to this incident. Our public lands are beautiful in their own right, and we should all strive to protect them while responsibly enjoying them.
SAR recovers body at Outpost Camp
Inyo County Sheriff’s Office received notification of a deceased 18-year old female at Outpost Camp on the route to Mt. Whitney on Dec. 15. According to her father, who was both the hiking partner and reporting party, she had always wanted to hike Mt. Whitney. Her father also indicated that both he and his daughter were experienced hikers, including hiking in winter conditions. They set out Monday mid-day with no intention of summiting. By early morning they reached Outpost Camp, where they decided to camp for the evening. Her father indicated that his daughter had been experiencing a headache; when he woke up the following the morning she was deceased.
Eastern Sierra Shop with a Cop
Over 40 children from Inyo and Mono Counties enjoyed breafast provided by the Bishop Lions Club on the morning of Saturday, Dec. 12 before they rode in a parade of patrol cars with lights and sirens down West Line Street and up Main Street to the Bishop Kmart.
Participating law enforcement personnel came from the Mono and Inyo County Sheriff’s Offices, Bishop Tribal Police, California Highway Patrol, California Department of Corrections, Owens Valley Camp, California Department of Fish & Wildlife, U.S. Forest Service, Mammoth Lakes and Bishop Police Departments, Inyo County and Mono County Probation.
Each child enjoyed an all-expenses-paid $220 shopping trip at Kmart, purchasing gifts for his or her family. Gifts were wrapped by volunteer gift wrappers. Santa made an appearance, too, before law enforcement took the shoppers with their wrapped gifts home.
