A rousing “No Kings” rally on Saturday confirmed that Bishop has become a bastion of solid blue and is dragging the rest of Inyo County into the purple political spectrum.
Organizers from Inyo 350 offered the rather specific count of 840 marchers going from the City Park to Line Street and back Saturday morning. Even a less-generous 600 would be historic, since by all accounts and counts, it was the largest political demonstration ever held in Bishop. By a long shot.
(Note 1: The long-memory contingent said it surpassed the Woman’s March in 2017, after Trump was inaugurated the first time. Note 2: After Trump won Inyo by double digits in 2016, Inyo went for Biden in 2020, the first Democrat to win the county since FDR, and Trump prevailed in 2024, by a few hundred votes.)
Passing cars and semis provided the energy with blasting horns, thumbs up and cheers which were cheered by the marchers.
Maybe the most interesting aspect of the event was the weak representation from the Trump-supporting Free Eastside group, which could only muster a handful of pickups with Trump and US flags screeching on Main Street horns blaring. One guy forgot his banners, it seems, and just waved his read, Make America Great hat at the marchers.
Mammoth Lakes also saw a solid contingent of protesters. Organizers offered a general assumption of 500 folks lining Main Street in an afternoon event. Lots of signs, smiles and steady horn honking affirmations from the passing drivers. The Mammoth group stayed in one spot which made their presence look more imposing and impressive.
Landing on Flag Day, marchers in both towns “reclaimed” the American flag, which was everywhere in various sizes and on signs.
Hell, even Darwin, population 50, reported 11 hearty desert-dwellers and two dogs (20% of the town) gathered with signs and stood in the middle of town. No traffic encouraged or disturbed them.
