American home of the week
By Mammoth Board of Realtors
The Mammoth Lakes Board of Realtors is a membership organization of real estate professionals serving Mammoth Lakes and the Eastern Sierra region. In an ongoing effort to give back to the community, the Mammoth Lakes Board of Realtors sets aside annual budgeted funds for worthy causes throughout the community.
Every other month, MLBOR’s Board of Directors meet to discuss ongoing business issues to keep the organization fluid. At every meeting we also respond to requests for donations to worthy causes located specifically in our area. Last year, the MLBOR made donations totaling approximately $5,000 to worthy causes, such as scholarships for Mammoth Lakes High School Seniors, AYSO, Booster Clubs, Mammoth Lakes Firefighters, Salvation Army, Shrine Circus and Mammoth Middle School Distinguished School signage, to name just a few.
“Giving back is an important part of our mission,” commented Paul Jurewitz, the 2011-2012 President of the Board of Realtors. “As Realtors engaged with the community, we know that people need to support each other in every way possible. Mammoth Lakes and the Eastern Sierra is our neighborhood.”
Additionally, this year, the MLBOR will be publishing an ongoing series of articles pertaining to the real estate industry in an effort to inform the community of on-going statewide initiatives and helpful topics specific to real estate matters.

“The Benefits of Homeownership”
At some point in time, most people are faced with the decision to either buy a home (if they have the ability to do so) or to continue renting. With the expiration of the homebuyers’ tax credit, that choice may be on peoples’ minds much more these days.
Renting can make sense for those not yet ready and/or able to afford a home, but for those in a position to purchase a home, it can offer immediate benefits and long-term advantages. According to the MLBOR, the benefits of owning a home go beyond financial considerations.
Home ownership is an investment in one’s future. Financial considerations are certainly important, but homeownership can be viewed as a lifestyle choice. By investing in a home, the buyer is also investing in their family, their future and becoming integrated into the larger community.
This harkens back to the “American Dream” and continues to be a goal of individuals and families from all walks of life. The National Association of Realtors (NAR) Profile of Home Buyers and Sellers survey reveals buyers most often cite the “desire to own” as the primary reason for their recent home purchase.
Research suggests that homeownership also strengthens communities. Homeowners are more likely to be involved and engaged in local issues, and they move less frequently than those renting. The net effect of this is lower crime rates, improved childhood education and better neighborhood upkeep. According to the NAR study, Social Benefits of Homeownership and Stable Housing, homeowners are more likely to vote in elections, and volunteer time for political and charitable causes more frequently than renters.
Buying a home provides families the opportunity to establish roots in a community. It’s also proven to be one of the best ways to build long-term wealth, with equity accumulation and tax benefits over time.
Data from the Federal Reserve Board shows typical homeowner’s net worth is 46 times that of a renters. Would-be homeowners should also consider the incredible opportunities offered in the current market.
The truth is, today’s buyers, especially first time homebuyers, are seeing many advantages to taking this step. Inventories are offering lower priced properties and mortgage rates are near 50-year lows. A buyer who is ready to take the next step should contact a Realtor in their area who can help them begin to build their future through homeownership.
