In an announcement on Tuesday, Eastern Sierra Unified School District Superintendent Don Clark called for the permanent closure of 30 percent of the schools in his Mono County district. An emergency School Board meeting has been scheduled for this Friday, March 12 at 7 p.m. at the Lee Vining Elementary School. A failure to anticipate $2.2 million in state budget cuts is being cited as the reason for the potential layoffs and school closures.
Schools on the chopping block are the Lee Vining Community Day School, High Desert Academy in Benton, and Eastern Sierra Academy in Bridgeport. An estimated 30 students would end up having no school to attend after the summer. With short notice the School Board will be expected to take action on this item at Friday’s meeting.
