Sharing the road in 40 Acres, too
Dear Editor,
Your article on share The Road in the May 1 The Sheet held my interest. There are a couple of observations that I would like to add. Part of the race course and the area bikers use and to train on go through my neighborhood called “40 Acres.” It is located below Paradise just off the Old Sherwin Grade. Truly a lovely area to go through, however with the large numbers of bike riders on race day it can be difficult to even get out of the driveway. While nice to think they stay on their side of the road except when passing, that is seldom the case when large numbers or riders are involved. They tend to take over the road entirely. One of the reasons that I live in 40 Acres is the access for bicycling and I don’t want a bad reputation year round due to a few events that could be better monitored and controlled by the event sponsors. It would be better to encourage participants to mind the rules of the road for safety as well as for the local residents. Needless to say for the local bicyclists who don’t want a bad reputation.
