Nikirk out as County Public Works Director

  • by Sheet Staff
  • in News
  • — 9 Jun, 2010

Early reports saying that Public Works Director Evan Nikirk was “dismissed” from his position by Mono County officials are being countered as untrue. Sources inside the County told The Sheet that the decision was due to differing opinions in management styles and called the move a “mutual” separation. Nikirk was unavailable, and “no comment” was the response from County Administrative Officer Dave Wilbrecht.
A formal response from Mono County is pending. So far, Wilbrecht has said only that Nikirk is “no longer working for Mono County.”
Nikirk had been with Mono County for roughly 10 years, first brought on as Solid Waste Director. Public Works administrators Kelly Garcia and Jeff Walters, along with Wilbrecht, have assumed Nikirk’s duties for the time being absence. The County plans bring in an interim Public Works Director to oversee the department while recruiting for a new permanent Public Works Director.

Well lessee…could replace him. Or not. Think a Mono County Public Works Director would be missed that much? With the state budget in the tank, how about a magic trick? Leave the position open for a while. See if whoever is left can muddle through. I mean, let’s be realistic – we’re losing a government worker. How much productivity could that possibly amount to?
