The Oprah Winfrey Show on Oct. 29 and Nov. 1 will feature Part 1 and 2 of Oprah’s recent camping trip to Yosemite with her best friend Gayle.
According to Donna Sisson, Branch Chief, Public Involvement and Outreach, at Yosemite National Park, “Oprah Winfrey and her friend Gayle King enjoyed a camping trip in Yosemite on Oct. 1 and 2. The two-day, one-night adventure was filmed for an upcoming broadcast on the Oprah Winfrey Show. Oprah and Gayle met with Park Ranger Shelton Johnson who toured them through the Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias, Tunnel View, and to Lower Pines Campground where the two friends set up their pop-up camper for the night. Ranger Johnson returned in the evening as Elizy Boman – a Buffalo Soldier protecting Yosemite at the turn of the century – and did a campfire chat for Oprah, Gayle, and some rather surprised and excited fellow Lower Pines campers. The trip concluded the following day with a mule ride and guided fly fishing along the Merced River.”
Multiple camera and production crew members were along for every step of the journey.
On Thursday, Oct. 14, Shelton and other invited guests joined the studio audience in Chicago for a taping of the two-part Oprah camping show. The entire stage set had been transformed into Oprah’s Lower Pines campsite complete with pop-up camper, fire circle, and Half Dome backdrop. Sisson claimed that the Park had heard that the Yosemite trip will now encompass two complete Oprah episodes, Oct. 29 and Nov. 1.
