“I carry pepper spray in my purse, plus I always walk with a friend. I’ve heard stories, but I’m not scared.”   -Ashley Smith, Lupin St.

“I always try to walk with someone. I’m not really scared. I’d love to see someone try to jump me.” -Tom Pernula, Manzanita Rd.

“During the day it’s fine, but at night there’s no light in the streets; it’s pitch black.” -Kristen Connelly, Manzanita Rd.

“I did feel safe, but I’ve always worried about walking up on a bear in the ghetto more than some gang.” -Peter Anderson, Azimuth Dr.

“I moved here in 2001 and haven’t locked my doors since. I can’t see why anyone would hurt someone here.” -Thomas Clark, Joaquin Rd.

“Hearing about the recent beatings makes me uneasy. I’ll think twice about cruising at night.” -Dwight Saunders, Mono St.

“Walking there at night is unnerving. Nothing’s happened to me, but I’ve had friends attacked.” -Teddy Herigstad, Joaquin Rd.

“No. You never see cops patrolling around here at night. Maybe I’ll start carrying my Taser.” -Josh Buck, Manzanita Rd.

The ghetto is dangerous. Were I to see Ashley walking down Lupin at night I expect I’d drop dead from uncontrollable heart palpitations.
