Kick your soccer up a notch

AYSO Advanced Soccer Training Camp is new for 2011. Learn from the pros as Mammoth’s Recreation Department hosts the AYSO Advanced Training Camp starting Aug. 15. This camp is for the more experienced player who aspires to take their game to the next level. The program incorporates professional coaching with educational seminars that will develop the players soccer knowledge on and off the field. In addition to the quality instruction, players will receive a camp shirt, an evaluation and workbook, a soccer ball and an educational gift.

Recommended for ages 10 – 18 (U12 – U19) Sessions: 9 a.m.-noon (half-day) or 9 a.m.– 3 p.m. (full day) at Shady Rest Park Soccer Field #1. Fee: $129 for Half Session; $170 for Full Session.

Here’s mud in your eye

Stomp through mud pits! Crawl on your hands and knees underneath obstacles! Haul your body up and over walls!

And that’s just a partial listing of what you’ll have to do when the Inaugural Mammoth Mud Run tests your endurance and strength in a series of obstacles, mud pits and more over a span of 5 kilometers in the highest Mud Run in California on Saturday, Aug. 27, at the Village at Mammoth/Canyon Lodge.

It’s fun. It’s dirty. It will leave you breathless. And it’s also the perfect warm up for the rest of the weekend at Mammoth Rocks in the Village!

Convict’s music, market, BBQ!

Convict Lake has been stepping up its game this season, adding lots of new features to the resort’s burgeoning list of summer amenities and offerings. And on Saturday, Aug. 20, Convict debuts its new Music, Barbecue & Farmers Market!

Starting at 11 a.m., enjoy the sounds of Eddy Evans on the saxophone and acoustic music by Jon Jacoby until 4 p.m.

Also starting at 11 a.m., local artists and produce vendors will have their wares on display and for sale until 4 p.m.

And in case all that music and shopping makes you hungry, Convict has you covered, serving up Jalapeno Bourbon Barbecue from noon-7 p.m.

Star Party: Wonders of the Sky

Join Devils Postpile Rangers for an evening of shooting stars! Meet the rangers at the Minaret Vista for a fabulous view of the night sky … including metors!

This program will feature the Perseids meteor shower that happens just once a year in August. The program will last about an hour and will focus on the meteor shower, as well the constellations and planets.

The program will take place Friday, Aug. 12, and again Saturday, Aug. 13, at 8:30 p.m. both nights.
