The Mammoth Lakes dining scene will change dramatically this winter with the opening of Campo Mammoth, the newest offering by acclaimed chef Mark Estee. The opening date is currently scheduled for mid-December.
With Campo Reno named one of Esquire’s best new restaurants in America, the new Mammoth location, in the Village at Mammoth spot where Hyde was previously located, will introduce Estee’s commitment to organic and seasonal ingredients as well as an emphasis on items that lend themselves well to families and to skiers and boarders in search of après ski fare.
Campo, which loosely translated means gathering spot or meeting place, will bring people together to savor the restaurant’s handmade pasta and authentic Napoletana style pizza made by a chef who is arriving in Mammoth from Italy. The menu emphasizes rustic cuisine driven by spotless technique and prepared with a lot of tender loving care. The cuisine pays homage to Estee’s “Whole Hog Philosophy,” digging deeper into the fuller flavors produced from using every portion of every ingredient. This new restaurant will continue to build upon his relationship with farmers, fisherman and ranchers to deliver the freshest food available.
In keeping with its location at the bottom of the ski hill, the restaurant’s spotlight will be on sharable, fun après ski items. Diners can toast their day on the slopes with Italian or California wines or specialty cocktails while lounging around on the outdoor couches in front of the fire pits.
Campo Mammoth also reaches out to families thanks to the fun, affordable, kid-friendly food on the children’s menu.
“We’re going to give families some action,” says Estee. “Whether it’s an outside table with ‘play dough’ for kids, being able to look in the window and see the pasta being made, or coming in to the restaurant, looking up over the counter and watching the pizzas being made and seeing the fire cooking. We’re going to liven it up and make it less formal.”
Estee is opening Campo Mammoth in partnership with Levy Restaurants, an award-winning company known for fine dining establishments such as the James Beard-winning Spiaggia in Chicago and for large-scale Southern California culinary venues as well as the food and beverage operations at Mammoth Mountain. When Levy decided to open a restaurant at Mammoth, they hand-picked Estee as the person to do it right.
Estee is no stranger to operating a restaurant in a ski town. He was the co-owner of the popular Moody’s Bistro, Bar & Beats in Truckee and has served as executive sous chef and chef de cuisine at the Lone Eagle Grille, Lake Tahoe’s most upscale, lakefront dining establishment and was also executive chef of the exclusive Lahontan Golf Club community. Most recently, Estee opened Campo in downtown Reno and the restaurant has more firmly cemented Estee’s reputation as one of Northern Nevada and California’s most talented chefs. –Press Release
