Mammoth Youth Football Super Bowl bound
Mammoth Youth Football League players held their final day of practice Thursday, before heading to Big Bear on Friday to play in the Antelope Valley Youth Football Association Super Bowl. Mammoth will take on the Boron Bobcats for the title tomorrow night.
MYFL has been to the championships twice before, the last time was six years ago when the Huskies were bested by Rim of the World.
The Huskies are coming off a 7-1-1 regular season, and made it to the finals by beating Big Bear 25-0 earlier this month in the playoffs. According to MYFL’s Coach Colby, Big Bear only was allowed four first downs during the entire game.
Ironically, the Huskies’ loss and tie were both to Boron. Mammoth was the only team to score on Boron all season.
“We have lots of first time players this year, and they’ve been amazing from the first game on,” Coach Curt Dessert enthused. QB Daniel Longino is a soccer player and only started handling an American football this season. He is already calling audible plays.
Ricky Johnson is an All-American this season, and has straight As. “75% of our team has academic awards in state testing,” Dessert added. He also stresses learning on the field as well. Dessert’s philosophy: “Good sportsmanship lasts forever.”
