Boutique fever
If you’ve ever struggled with the limited options for women’s fashion here in town, new additions Deer Rose Boutique in the Vons shopping center, and Roma Boutique in the Sierra Design Studio, may add welcome diversity to your shopping rounds.
Deer Rose Boutique, which opened its doors last weekend, offers a hand-picked selection of young, contemporary fashion. Owner Christina Manolescu, a graduate of Otis College of Art and Design and the Academy of Couture Art in Los Angeles, has stocked the shop with a range of cute, non-designer brand items at affordable prices.
“I have such open tastes,” said Manolescu. “I like unique, different things.” From party dresses to cozy sweaters, and from studded leggings to funky stone and shell jewelry, Deer Rose has something for everyone. And while the boutique offers dressier options, it also provides functional clothes for the working girl. “I cater to waitresses,” Manolescu explained; “girls that work hard that can’t afford the designer brands.” To that end, Deer Rose offers a 15% discount on all black work shirts, with several simple but stylish options.
Manolescu’s overall aim: “I want to help us all not look alike, because we do live in a small town,” she said. With a limited number of signature items, ranging from playful bear-face headbands, to flirty flower-print jeans, to sophisticated sheath dresses, Deer Rose may do just that.
Across the street in the Sierra Design Studio, Roma Boutique will be celebrating its grand opening this Saturday, Dec. 22. The boutique is a long time dream for Sierra Design Studio founder and owner Robin Stater, who has been passionate about clothing ever since she learned to sew at age 4. “I’ve carried [western brand] Double D in the store before,” she explained, “but after going around and trying on clothes at some different locations in town, I realized I’d like another option.” What Stater found missing was a variety of choices for the adult woman; elegant, sophisticated styles for the ladies of Mammoth. “I’d like to find things that make women feel good about themselves,” she said. “I have a clientele I’ve been developing for 25 years, so I wanted to offer them something else; something different.”
Roma Boutique, while catering to the mature woman, hopes to offer selections for younger shoppers, too. With a range from classic, elegant silk blouses, to funky studded tops, to flirty foil jeans, the Boutique presents options both sophisticated and unexpected.
Thus far, Stater described her customers’ response to the Boutique as “ecstatic.” “I have quite a wide customer base, many who, like me, have a desire for a certain type of clothing that’s classy, comfortable, and can go from a resort to the city,” she said. “Everybody is really, really excited about this.”
Stater herself was excited to note that Roma Boutique will soon be carrying Bogner Fire & Ice ski wear. “It’s a big deal to even be able to have Bogner in a boutique,” she said. It’s fitting then that Roma Boutique is named after skiing and fashion pioneer Roma McCoy, a long time friend and mentor of Stater’s. “She and Dave are really the reason why we’re all here,” she said. “I wanted to honor her for her fashion style and her trendsetting over the past decades. She’s a fashion icon I admire.”
Sierra Design Studio, which marked its 24th anniversary this year, will be celebrating the grand opening of Roma Boutique from 3-8 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 22.
