Blake Jones Trout Derby
Get ready to go fish … one of the Eastern Sierra’s longest running traditions, the 46th Annual Blake Jones Trout Derby is slated for Saturday, March 16, at Pleasant Valley Reservoir just north of Bishop.
Hosted by the Bishop Area Chamber of Commerce & Visitors Bureau, there are categories for adults and kids and additional prizes are awarded for big fish, early bird entries and farthest travel to the derby. Co-sponsors include Inyo County, the City of Bishop and the Paiute Palace Casino. Registration: $15 for adults and $7.
For the third consecutive year, co-sponsor Schat’s Bakkery has added a separate raffle offering a brand new Dave Scadden Escape Pontoon Boat Package valued at over $1,000! Raffle tickets just $5 each or 5 for $20. Winner need not be present.

Elevate good times, come on!
Elevation Mammoth 2013, the 11th Annual edition of the country’s third- largest gay ski week, takes place March 13-17 at Mammoth Mountain and in the Village at Mammoth. Elevation brings together people from across the country and the world, for a week of events to celebrate diversity and have fun. Now in it’s 11th year, Elevation will host 2,500 riders, nine major parties, and zero attitude.
Elevation Mammoth hosts world class DJs that spin at both night-time and apres-ski events. Annual highlights include the Party at 10,000 Feet, which begins with a dark night-time gondola ride to the highest elevation party in North America. And of course, the signature apres-ski parties.
World Water Day events
World Water Day is held annually on March 22 as a means of focusing attention on the importance of freshwater and advocating for the sustainable management of freshwater resources. On Friday, March 22, California Trout, in partnership with the Sierra Nevada AmeriCorps and Inyo-Mono Integrated Regional Water Management Program (IRWMP), will host a water forum and catered dinner at the Tri-County Fairgrounds’ Tallman Pavillion in Bishop to celebrate five years of water collaboration and take part in a growing effort that perpetuates self sustaining water management in the Eastern Sierra.

Mammoth Invitational 2013
Team and ticket sales are now open and pro athletes are lined up for the 5th Annual Mammoth Invitational at Mammoth Mountain Ski Area, April 12-14, a benefit for the Mammoth Mountain Community Foundation.
Pro skiers and snowboarders serve as team coaches, inluding top names such as: X-Games gold medalist Kelly Clark, Olympian Stacey Cook, home-grown ski cross champion John Teller and free ski legend Glen Plake, along with national and international winter sports stars such as Didier Cuche, Steven Nyman, Manfred Moelgg and Laurenne Ross. Many athletes will be competing in the 2014 Olympics in Sochi, Russia.
Events include a biathlon, poker run, racing and more. New this year: an on-snow expo, open to the public, at Main Lodge/Main Park that gives kids a chance to meet, ski and ride with their favorite pro athletes!
Hospital Auxiliary Scholarship
For more than 10 years, Mammoth Hospital Auxiliary has sponsored scholarships for college students pursuing medical or medically-related careers. And this year, the application period is now open. Applicants must meet the following qualifications: 1.) Completed two years of prerequisites in a medically-related curriculum, or worked for two years in a medically-related field in Mono County. Submit verification with application. 2.) Currently in a medically-related course of study. 3.) Is a current Mono County resident (two or more years). 4.) May be a graduate student who wishes to changes career path, or change to a different medically-related profession.
Applications are now available at the Mono County Library front desk in Mammoth Lakes, at the Mammoth Hospital Admission Window and at the Cast Off Cashier’s Desk. The Auxiliary has ample funds for scholarships.
