Auxiliary Scholarships
It’s scholarship time once again, when your high school grad should be thinking about applications for next year. And if you have a year or more of college, live in the Southern Mono County Hospital District and are pursuing a medically-related program at a college of your choice, you too may be eligible for a Mammoth Hospital Auxiliary Scholarship.
Starting at $1,000, it’s a healthy one, given to support Mammoth residents who wish to become doctors, nurses, EMTs or enter other medically-related professions. The Auxiliary has awarded these scholarships annually for more than 15 years, and many recipients have been able to upgrade their qualifications and enter the medical field.
Auxiliary spokesperson Suzanne Stokes said it’s just the Auxiliary’s way of saying thanks to the community for the support Mammoth Lakes has shown the Hospital Auxiliary.
Forms are available at Mammoth Hospital, the Cast-Off Store and Mammoth Lakes Library. All completed pages, including transcripts, letters of recommendation and a legible, typed or handwritten application, are due by hand or mail no later than April 30.
Complete information, including what to do if you have questions, is included with each packet.
Blehm on Berets
Auther Eric Blehm will speak on his new book, “The Only Thing Worth Dying For: How Eleven Green Berets Forged a New Afghanistan,” on Saturday, Feb. 20, at Inyo Council for the Arts, on Main Street in Bishop at 6:30 p.m.
Blehm, author of the local blockbuster “The Last Season,” has been lauded for giving this totally different subject his trademark in-depth research, and energetic writing style.
The book, called “a real eye-opener,” is not only about what it’s like to be in military service under combat conditions, but also about the chain of command – or lack thereof – that issues the decisions and commands that dictate the actions of our ‘ground forces’ overseas
Not supporting one side or the other it still covers important issues for citizens who wish to educate themselves about our activities in the Middle East.
Maj. Jason Amerine, the mission’s leader, endorsed the book, saying, “Blehm was the one writer I and men from ODA 574 thought would do right by our team members who lost their lives in Afghanistan, telling the story of our mission as we experienced it His genuine desire to get it right encouraged us to work so closely with him, in order to tell a chapter of American history that, so far, has not been told.”
