The California’s Eastern Sierra has been listed as one of the Top U.S. Destinations for 2013 by the preeminent travel publisher Lonely Planet. Several of Mono County’s most enticing attractions are highlighted including the ghost town at Bodie State Historic Park, the popular fishing destination of Bridgeport, the remarkable Devils Postpile National Monument and the oasis of Mono Lake, which serves as a vital habitat for millions of birds—all noted as not-to-miss by visitors to the Eastern Sierra.

“This is fantastic recognition to have California’s Eastern Sierra chosen as one of Lonely Planet’s top recommended destinations in the country,” said Alicia Vennos, Economic Development Manager and Film Commissioner for Mono County. “We look forward to welcoming visitors as they come and discover the tremendous number of things there are to see and do in spectacular Mono County.”

This is the third year that the Lonely Planet Guide staff has researched and compiled a list of the “Top 10 Places to Go” in the country. Visit the Travel section at CNN.com to view a clip of Lonely Planet’s U.S. travel editor, Robert Reid, as he discusses his publication’s picks for 2013. Lonely Planet’s Top U.S. Destinations List is one of the top-read articles on lonelyplanet.com each year.  The entire “Top U.S. Destinations for 2013” story can be viewed at lonelyplanet.com.

Lonely Planet, which enables curious travelers to experience the world and get to the heart of a place via guidebooks to almost every destination on the planet, receives more than 12 million unique visitors each month to their website lonelyplanet.com.   Additionally, Lonely Planet claims a dedicated traveler community with more than 925,000 Facebook fans (facebook.com/lonelyplanet) and 914,000 Twitter followers (@lonelyplanet).

Sorry to pick nits, but Devils Postpile is in Madera County; the Mono-Madera County line follows the crest of the Sierra, which one crosses at Minaret Summit. Mono County also frequently claims title to Little Lakes Valley, which is in Inyo County (see its website). Thanks.
