Volleyball steamrolls the competition
The Mammoth High School Girls Volleyball teams continued their winning ways this past week with home wins over Boron and Vasquez.
On Oct. 10, the JV Huskies defeated the Boron Ladycats 25-21, 25-20. They followed up that victory with a close match against the Mustangs of Vasquez, losing the first game 20-25 but rebounding to take the next two games 25-20 and 15-11 to improve to 6-1 in the Desert Mountain League.
The Varsity Huskies also improved to 6-1 in DML play with 2 convincing wins defeating Boron in straight sets 25-20, 25-17, 25-18 and Vasquez 25-15, 25-18, 25-16. Mammoth currently sits in second place in the DML just 1/2 game behind Desert Christian. The Huskies are also ranked 8th out of 46 teams in the CIF Southern Section Division 5A.
“It’s way too early to think about playoffs”, said Mammoth Head Coach John Morris, “but this team is playing with great determination. It’s great to see them continue to improve with each match.”
While all of the Varsity Huskies saw playing time in these matches, notable performances were turned in by Junior setters Kylie Laframboise with 16 assists and Sierra Gilfoy with 5 assists, and Sophomore middle hitter/blocker Tatum Sandvigen with 4 kills on offense.
The Huskies then took on Lone Pine on Oct. 15 at home.
Both the JV and Varsity teams improved their league records to 7-1 with wins over visiting Lone Pine on Tuesday. The JV Huskies took their match in 2 games 25-23 and 25-17. Freshman McKenna Smith had 4 aces, 6 assists and 5 digs and freshman Caitlin Young added 3 aces, 4 kills and 3 digs.
The evening was especially sweet for the Varsity Huskies as they swept the Golden Eagles 25-9, 25-15 and 25-17 to cap off their Senior Night celebration. Seniors Kyra McKee, Hailey Sanders, Sabrina Clevenger, Emma Peckenpaugh, Kelly Berger and Cassidy Morris played the majority of the match as one unit, enjoying a well deserved Senior victory.
“I have had the pleasure of coaching this group of Seniors since they were 6th graders,” said Head Coach Morris. “It was great to see the 6 of them playing together, so well, and having fun. As a coach it’s very rewarding!”
The Huskies next test was scheduled for Silver Valley at home on Thursday, Oct. 17. They then have a break over the upcoming Homecoming weekend.
