Junction Fire smoke visible in Mammoth
A small wildfire is burning on the Sierra National Forest near the junction of the Middle Fork of the San Joaquin River and Fish Creek in the John Muir Wilderness. Dubbed the “Junction Fire,” this lightning-caused fire was started on Sunday July 25.
The Junction Fire is approximately 1 acre in size and is burning in steep and rocky terrain in the wilderness. The fire is being monitored daily by the Sierra National Forest and it is being managed for resource benefit. Because of the inaccessible terrain, the fire is difficult to safely suppress and no firefighters are currently on the ground at the fire location.
Smoke from the Junction Fire is visible from Mammoth Mountain Ski Area, Mammoth Gondola, Minaret Vista, Devils Postpile area and many local trails. Smoke may be visible for several days and may be visible from other areas in the Mammoth Lakes vicinity.
