Husky Pup Fun Run – UPDATED

Mammoth Elementary School’s Parent Teacher Organization sponsored last Friday’s Annual Husky Pup Fun Run, now in its 22nd year. The event has raised $20,000 to date according to PTO President Pam Bold, but they expect more money to trickle in over the next few days. Close to 600 students participated in the run, including special needs students that were assisted by Disabled Sports Eastern Sierra.

As a special treat this year, Olympians Deena Kastor, Anna Pierce and Nancy Fiddler, as well as members of the High Sierra Striders and Mammoth Track Club, ran along with the students.

“The mission of the High Sierra Striders is to support athletic and academic achievement and to promote lifelong health and fitness through running. What better way than to show kids that mature adults like us run for fun and health,” said Andrew Kastor, President and Founder of the High Sierra Striders.

Another highlight for the students was the use of the new Measure R finish line arch, purchased with Measure R funds. The arch has been used for several events this year, including the Footloose Freedom Mile.

“The kids thought that was really cool,” Bold said.

Each child asked friends and families for donations either as a flat rate or on a per lap basis. Depending on the child’s grade, students ran between 20 – 45 minutes around a 200 meter track. Funds generated from the event pay for assemblies, after-school enrichment classes, classroom and teacher’s supplies, technology, library books, supplemental math and reading programs, the ski program, physical education and more.

Each student received a high-quality, long-sleeved t-shirt professionally designed by Dave Titus Illustrations that they wore at the event and can continue to use as spirit wear throughout the year.
