The legalization of medical marijuana dispensaries may be on hold in Mammoth Lakes, but there is one person in Mammoth who is facilitating the issuance of medical marijuana cards: Scott Calvert.
Calvert recently opened his 420 Medicard Mammoth Lakes office on the 2nd floor of the Mammoth Luxury Outlet Mall (next to Body Works and down the hall from The Sheet).
Thus far, 20 cards have been issued through his office during the first three weeks of operation.
Here’s how it works. You either come into the office or flul out patient history forms online at www.420medicard.com.
420 Medicard has offices in 13 California muncipalities. All but the Mammoth office are located in Southern California.
Calvert then facilitates an internet consultation via video with Dr. Darryl Harris. Calvert says the consultations range in duration from 15 to 30 minutes.
Sheet: What are the odds are approval?
Calvert: Without paperwork, you might get a temporary 30-day card. With paperwork, that’s a different matter. A diagnosis from another doctor or a current prescription …and you’re looking pretty good.”
Cards are valid for one year. The initial fee to get a card is $125. Renewals, said Calvert, are $100.
For patients issued temporary cards, they have 30 days to come back to 420Medicard with medical documentation to extend the validation of their cards.
A basic card allows patients to possess up to 8 oz. of marijuana and as many as 12 plants.
A “super” card (availability dependent upon condition) allows patients to possess up to 2.5 lbs. of marijuana and as many as 99 plants.
“We were looking to open up a dispensary,” said Calvert, “but the Town’s finance office shut us down and wouldn’t accept the application … so it was my idea to open a doctor’s office instead.”
Calvert says PPO insurance is accepted, and that those interested can contact his office (866.420.9453) for more information. Clients can be assured strict patient-doctor confidentiality.
A ballot measure on medical marijuana dispensaries is targeted for inclusion in the June election.
