Huskies Volleyball beats Boron, Mojave, splits at Silver Valley
Recent court action has been good for the Mammoth High Girls Volleyball team, who closed out October with wins against Boron on Oct. 29 and Mojave on Oct. 30.
On the road at Boron, the JV won in 2 games: 25-9 and 25-16.
Sophie Hein put up 3 aces and 1 kill; Jolene Senn had a pair of aces and 1 kill; and Hailey Sanders smashed in 2 aces.
The wins brought the JV to 6-4 in league play.
The Varsity had a tougher time, but pulled out the wins: 26-24, 25-21 and 25-22 following a string of long rallies.
Arely Bramona-Fierro put up 4 aces and 2 digs; Kate Desalvo delivered 2 aces, 2 digs and 14 kills; Kristen Sigmen threw down a pair of aces, 3 digs and 2 kills; Jessie Harris powered in 2 aces, 4 digs, 4 kills and an additional 3 blocks; and Aly Vanko blasted in 2 aces, 1 dig and a logged a whopping 21 assists.
The next day, the team moved on to Mojave.
The JV won in 2 games: 25-8 and 25-11. Sophie Hein scored 6 aces; Cassidy Morris fired in 3 aces and 1 kill; and Kyra McKee notched in 2 aces.
The Varsity took down Mojave in 3 games: 25-15, 25-20 and 25-5.
Sam Knadler posted a big 9 aces (including several jumpserves), 2 digs and 3 kills; Jessie Harris chalked up 4 aces, 2 digs, 9 kills and 1 block; Aly Vanko zinged in 5 aces, 2 kills and a huge 22 assists; and Samyie Garland kicked in 2 aces and 2 kills.
The win took the Varsity to 9-3 in league play, 11-3 in the season, and 15-8-2 overall.
“They played great to the end of the game, no matter the score,” Coach Megan Guffey commented. “The girls really worked hard to play their own game instead of changing their style to that of the other teams.”
In the girls’ final home game, Mammoth’s JV lost to Silver Valley in 3 games: 18-25, 25-9 and 9-15.
Jolene Senn posted 6 aces and 3 kills; Rebecca Albright put in 1 ace and had 4 kills; and Kelly Berger had an ace and another 3 kills.
That dropped the JV to 6-5 in league play and 8-5 overall. The Varsity, however, took home a win.
Syd Knadler nailed 2 aces, 2 kills and a pair of blocks; Aly Vanko lobbed in an ace, 2 digs, 2 kills and 19 big assists; Jessie Harris helped out with 1 dig, 6 kills and 9 blocks; Samyie Garland had a kill and 3 blocks; and Kate Desalvo contributed an ace and another 7 kills.
The Varsity was at 10-3 in league behind Lone Pine and Vasquez.
That same night, the team celebrated Senior Night. Honors went to Jenny Clark, Aly Vanko, Sam Knadler, Kate Desalvo and Hannah Hein. “These 5 seniors have worked really hard,” Coach Guffey observed. “They met with me before the season started to discuss what they wanted their season to look like. They took ownership, initiative, and leadership of their team.”
The Huskies took their V-Ball show on the road for the team’s final match of the season against Lone Pine on Nov. 4.
