Once upon a mattress
Playhouse 395 will hold auditions for its spring musical comedy, “Once Upon A Mattress,” on Saturday, Dec. 11, from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. in the Bishop Union High School Auditorium. Callbacks will be Sunday, Dec. 12, from 3-9 p.m., and the first Cast Meeting will be Thursday, Dec. 16, from 6-8 p.m. in the BUHS Library.
The play with music by Mary Rodgers, lyrics by Marshall Barer and book by Jay Thompson, Dean Fuller and Marshall Barer opened off-Broadway in May 1959, and was written as an adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tale “The Princess and the Pea.”

Copeland: “Island Girl”
Join Disabled Sports Eastern Sierra Director Kathy Copeland, Mammoth’s very own “Island Girl,” for this year’s “Island Extravaganza,” the nonprofit’s largest fundraiser, at Canyon Lodge on Saturday, Dec. 11, from 6-11 p.m. The popular island-themed evening includes dinner, live music, raffle and silent auction.
Highlights of this year’s silent auction include a Mammoth Mountain season pass courtesy of The Local Book. Grand raffle prize: a Maui vacation for two! White Mtn. holidays
White Mountain Research Station holds its Holiday Potluck Candle-lit Dinner and Program on Dec. 8 at 6 p.m., 3000 E. Line St. in Bishop.
Bring a friend or neighbor, a little extra food and a beverage to share, along with your own place setting. Dinner will be followed by a program with slides from Dave and Janet Carle about their travels around the world along the 38th Parallel, seeking water-related environmental and cultural connections. These travel discoveries will become a book published by the University of California Press. They have crossed the U.S., Europe, Turkey, and Korea, and will be in Japan, China and Turkmenistan in Spring 2011.

MCA’s “Wonderland”
Mono Council for the Arts’ new gallery, Mammoth’s non-profit, local/regional art venue, presents “Winter Wonderland,” displaying a variety of mixed media artwork in the winter season theme, now through January 15, 2011.
An artist reception and raffle drawing will be held during the gallery’s big First Anniversary celebration on January 8, 2011 from 5-8 p.m. The public is invited to stop by and enter to win raffle art pieces, including a GRAND PRIZE photograph by Alan Barlow, “Moon Over Mono.”

Great Basin images
Crowley Friends of the Library present “Images of the Sierra Nevada and Great Basin,” a collection of 17 photographs by John Dittli can be viewed at the Crowley Lake Library through Dec. 30.
Dittli’s scenes, especially those of the Eastern Sierra, have appeared in hundreds of publications. His most recent published collection, “Walk The Sky: Following The John Muir Trail,” captures the beauty hikers witness while traveling one of the most popular Sierra paths.
