Animal Shelter status report

In the proposed Town of Mammoth Lakes budget plan put forth in May, one of the cuts calls for cancelling a $65,000 contract with Mono County for the Whitmore Animal Shelter.

According to the Town’s notes on the line item, “The County will likely close the shelter, which will require [South County] residents to travel to Bridgeport for animal shelter services.”

But that might not necessarily be the case.

According to an observation from Mono County Board of Supervisors Chair Vikki Bauer, “We have not had any information on how that might work. It might be mandated that the County have an animal shelter [in the southern part]; we might not be able to close it.” Bauer indicated that something else that might mitigate closing the Whitmore Shelter is the maintenance of the pool and ball fields. “They pay us for doing the animal shelter and we pay them for doing the pool and ball fields,” she pointed out.

The shelter is a very badly needed service for our guests and residents alike. Have you ever lost a pet? if it weren’t for these folks some of them would not be reunited with their loved ones. I vote we cut other programs and save our pets from bad things.
